Our approach

About Field & Forest Academy

Field & Forest Academy creates thoughtful outdoor learning materials for ages 4–14. We welcome families, educators, and curious children into a shared practice of noticing the living world—one small discovery, one muddy boot, and one return visit at a time.

Caregivers and children share a field-journal discovery beside an evergreen-lined lake.

Learning with care

A slower way to grow outside

We believe outdoor learning can begin close to home: beside a sidewalk crack, under a favorite tree, in a schoolyard, or on a familiar trail. The goal is not to rush through a checklist. It is to make time for children to pause, look closely, listen carefully, and wonder aloud.

Our guides give grown-ups practical ways to make that time feel welcoming and manageable. They offer a gentle starting point for families and educators who want to learn alongside children, follow their questions, and build a lasting habit of being outside together.

What we practice

Curiosity and stewardship belong together

Every outdoor question is also an invitation to care. As children learn to recognize a bird call, notice a changing leaf, or trace where rainwater goes, they can begin to understand that they are part of a larger web of life—and that their choices matter within it.

Notice first

We make room for close observation before quick answers: colors, tracks, textures, weather, patterns, and all the questions that follow.

Care for place

Respect for the outdoors grows through simple, repeated practices—treading gently, leaving room for living things, and caring for shared spaces.

Build confidence

With preparation, clear boundaries, and trusted grown-ups nearby, children can take meaningful steps toward feeling capable outside.

Outside, together

There is room for every kind of explorer.

The Field & Forest family is a community of learners, caregivers, and educators making room for outdoor time in real life. Come as you are, begin with the place you have, and let each outing be an opportunity to learn together.

We know that time outside does not always look picture-perfect. It can be a ten-minute walk before dinner, a damp afternoon of collecting observations from the porch, or a class returning to the same patch of ground through the seasons. Those moments count.

Our approach centers practical learning and thoughtful safety: choosing an appropriate place, preparing for the weather, setting kind and clear expectations, and helping children notice when it is time to rest, regroup, or head home. Confidence grows when children are supported to try, observe, and make good decisions at their own pace.

We are grateful for the outdoors and the lessons it continues to offer. Field & Forest Academy is here to help make those lessons feel possible to bring into your family, classroom, or community—again and again.
